March is Women's History Month which began as a week long national celebration only as recently as 1981. Since then Congress has passed a series of public laws both stating in specific years the entire month of March is Women's History Month and also that the sitting president can proclaim March as such annually. Living outside of DC, I'm fortunate to be close to many exhibits, panel discussions, and concerts honoring and observing women's role in history. But no matter where you live you can catch articles, specials on tv, and find a ton of information here, here, and here.
As a nod to the amazing women we are celebrating this month, I wanted to share a few of my favorite card shops founded and run by incredible ladies! When I decided to go into business for myself creating and selling cards, I was inspired by all the talent already present in the industry. These shops are not only filled with beautiful products, but the women running them are focused, enthusiastic, and motivated.
Based in Seattle and run by Sara McNally this letterpress stationary company is filled with real and straightforward cards for all occasions.
Custom made business cards and wedding invitations, greeting cards, notepads, journals, and wrapping paper are all beautifully designed and made by Cara and her team in California.
Omaha-based Ramona & Ruth is named for Founder Kim Burks' two grandmothers. Her products are simple, classic, and beautiful.
You've probably already heard of the massively successful Sugar Paper based out of LA, but they're on this list because they are two intelligent, driven women who have cornered the market with chic, distinctive stationary.
Katherine Watson took her passion for printmaking in college and turned it into a distinctive shop filled with natural, intricate products. She's based in Portland, Maine and I am exceedingly jealous.
Self proclaimed "safe haven for paper geeks," P A R C E L is a Colorado stationary shop run by Brianne and features funny, timely, and sometimes wonderfully crass merchandise.
Honorable Mention #2 is based out of Boston and founded by Christina who has created a fun, empowering business from her lifelong passion.
Honorable Mention #3 is a lady boss of all paper lady bosses: Nole Garey. She took her love of stationary and turned it into a creative blog that is now the place to go for designers, creatives, and lovers of all things beautiful.
There you have it, just a few ladies that motivate me every day by doing what they love.
