If you’ve read my about page you’ll have discovered a few reasons why Cafe Notes + Company came to being. I had just left an executive position working with people I loved but for a company I didn’t. I was partially fulfilled and frequently unhappy because my career was being dictated by someone else. You may think, “well yes Sarah, that is the way of the world,” but I don’t think it has to be. I wanted to define my own success, productivity and career, I didn’t want it laid out for me by someone else’s standards. This all may sound very selfish, but this is where the seed of starting my own business came from.
Then came you.
It is my mission to provide quality, affordable products + services that inspire you to reach out + connect creatively with each other
I am not in this to blow up into Papyrus or Hallmark (hahaha). I am a small-business, local-minded person who wants to connect with a community of people who feel passionately about the same things: writing, making real connections and coffee. Coffee and greeting cards? Just wait, I’ll get to that.
As I brainstormed how to turn my passions into a career, I discovered at the heart of what I wanted to do was provide a service and product that fit a need. From there, creating affordable cards with quality content turned into also creating a space that provided inspiration for who, what, when and how to write cards and letters. It seems so straightforward, but I’ve found that people don’t send cards anymore because they
...don’t have any on hand
...can’t get to the store with enough time to send it
...don’t want to spend a fortune
...don’t know what to say
...don’t know when to send it
….or don’t know who to send it to
For me, this was the easy part and I want to share it with you. Things like
my methods on how to stay organized, stocked with cards and on top of events that warrant a card
my inspirations for what to say, how to say it and when to say it
my ideas for who to send a card to (I’ll give you a hint: it starts with an “a” and ends in “nyone”)
With these ideas set in place for the foundation of my business, I thought about how I could meet your needs, be fulfilled in my day-to-day responsibilities and work toward my “dream big” goal of opening a coffee shop. Through writing about the importance of putting thoughts down on paper, the significance of sending a card when someone needs that physical affirmation of care, and creating cards that provide a platform for you to achieve these things, I discovered my daily fulfillment while helping others.
And writing + coffee? To me they go hand in hand
It’s probably because during my college days I did most of my homework in many amazing cafes in my college town. I find coffee shops to be inspiring, alive and full of possibility. Or because writing and coffee are two things that bring people together to communicate and connect. You send a card to someone to share your story and to make them feel remembered. You grab a cup of coffee to catch up on life and get to know the person across from you. On the other hand they can be solo activities, but even when sitting in a cafe alone you’re surrounded by other people. And when you’re writing a letter to someone across the country you are alone, but you are, in essence, with the person you’re writing to.
Finally, coffee and writing are two things that can define you. In the way you take your coffee, whether or not you enjoy writing, if you write for you or for the public eye, etc. They are each signifiers, a way to explain yourself and portray who you are.
With this connection in mind, I created Cafe Notes + Company. A name that recalls my favorite place to connect, my favorite way to connect and the community it took, and will continue to take, to make this adventure successful.
